Moles are mammals living underground through digging tunnels for making them their home with their big and powerful paws and limbs. They can breathe underground because of their carbon dioxide tolerance and their special hemoglobin that is closely linked with oxygen. They use oxygen efficiently too by reusing the air they exhaled.

Although these animals are considered agricultural pest in several countries because of the damages caused by their digging. This is why people use mole trap to get rid of them in their ground and protect their plants and machinery that gets destroyed by exposed stones. There are different type of traps which can be used in controlling them.

These animals will not spread disease or harm people physically but can damage your lawn or garden with their diet of grubs and worm. Landscape could be destroyed which you spent a significant amount already for your home beautification like flowers and plants. Trapping them is lethal though as there is no invention where they could be caught alive.

The first type is spear traps which are set above active tunnels and squished it down to have the spear on top. Its trigger is against the dirt and when the mole passes by the squished area, they will push it open, activating the trigger when it gets pushed up. This will cause the spears to slam down, impaling the animal in the process.

Scissor traps are set above the active tunnels with scissor blades placed inside the ground in each side the tunnel. When this is triggered by the crawling through of the mole then the blades would snap together which kills the pest. This trap is very popular and was used for many decades now because setting it up is very easy.

The paper clip traps will be set inside the tunnels with one facing outwards so it would get triggered whatever direction that the mole will come from. The pin which hols them open would slip if the pest would pass by and shuts down, killing it. But locating the perfect tunnel is essential to be effective because there are inactive ones.

These devices should not have any scent which can warn these animals which means new ones are the best choice for this though older ones are usable as well. Thoroughly clean them and expose them to elements such as burying them before using them for several days. Rub your hands using dirt before touching them for your scent to be removed and prevents its transfer.

The most effective area on where you could set up your devices are in their center parlor where the tunnels branch off. Follow the mounds they leave to find these parlors and you may look, touch and smell to find the freshest one. These mounds are where they usually get in and outside and where excavated dirt are dumped.

Dig the mound carefully and find the main tunnel which will probably happen. Use a long stick in checking them and that place must have the least resistance. This is where your trap should be placed.
