Ottawa is Canada's capital city. It is a melting pot of people and culture. It is a city with a record of being among the cleanest and the safest in the world. Having this record means that it is also a city with a very high living standard and a low unemployment rate. Being the cultural hub that it is means that is nurtures many forms of culture, one of the most beautiful being ballet. There are many old and established ballet schools in Ottawa that for many years have produced lots of excellent professional dancers.

Ballet in Canada has been established for many years and is an old and well respected form of dance. As a dance form it has roots in the 15th century renaissance courts of Italy where it started out as a performance dance. It later evolved into a form of concert dance that took hold primarily in France and Russia. Today it has become a global attraction, and has been influential in the formation of many of the foundations of other dance genres.

In Canada this dance was not very popular until the mid 20th century. Although it had been introduced by the French in their colonization of Canada, it was usually only taught to the children of the rich by private tutors who had come from France to make a living. Only in the 1930's did it really take off and the great Canadian teachers emerged.

These teachers were foreigners that had danced in the dance capitals of the world of that time, namely France and Russia. Thanks to these teachers for the first time Canada has professional dancers coming out of it. However no dance companies had been formed yet. So the students that were taught by the masters of the 1930's left to greener pastures and came back well respected and started the first great dance companies in Canada.

A question to ask ourselves is why has this dance been so influential on global culture? One of the reasons is that it is very expressive. It can be used as a visual counterpart to a musical piece, or used to tell a tale; even just by itself it can be interpreted in many ways. It has managed to transcend all boundaries of race, culture and borders and bring people together to enjoy an expression of ideas and emotions through the beauty of movement.

Although it is beautiful, it is not easy. Dance classes in the capital city of Canada are very strenuous. Dancers are often required to start classes when they are young and have to go through years of grueling training both mentally and physically before they can be professionals.

This grueling training often puts a lot of wear and tear on a dancers body. The strenuous exercises that are required tear muscles and cause injury, dancers also have to be on their tip toes much of the time and this can cause bone deformation. Taking up the art of dance is not for the faint of heart.

Although it is a hard life being a professional dancer, it pays off exponentially when one finally gets the opportunity to dance for a full house. Expression with movement is one of humanities most beautiful forms of communication. Dancers that come out of the studios of Canada's capital city have been weaving these stories for over 85 years now and don't show any sign of stopping.
